{"id":3921,"date":"2018-09-14T23:24:04","date_gmt":"2018-09-14T21:24:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vcrc.org.ua\/?p=3921"},"modified":"2018-09-18T00:58:07","modified_gmt":"2018-09-17T22:58:07","slug":"3921-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vcrc.org.ua\/en\/3921-2\/","title":{"rendered":"NEIGHBOURS: The 10th Edition of The Warsaw Under Construction Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3943\" src=\"http:\/\/vcrc.org.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/WWB10_KIEV_FB_EVENT_UKR-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Neighbours<\/em> is the theme of the 10<sup>th<\/sup> Festival of Architecture and Urbanism\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwb10.artmuseum.pl\/\">Warsaw Under Construction<\/a>\u00a0held since 2009 by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/artmuseum.pl\/en\">Warsaw Museum of Modern Art<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/muzeumwarszawy.pl\/\">Museum of Warsaw.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>This year, Visual Culture Research Centre has been invited to curate the festival. The festival program has been divided between Warsaw and Kyiv. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Kyiv\u2019s Petrivska Street, 34 (\u2018Thicket\u2019) is going to be a venue for the <em>Neighbours<\/em> urban project during September 19-28, 2018.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Until the 1990&#8217;s, Kyiv\u2019s Petrivska Street connected Podil with the Upper City. The political, social and geological cataclysms led to the abandonment of this route. The local buildings were gradually destroyed and turned into an impassable thicket: forces of nature crowded people out of this area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After several decades of abandonment, the area was occupied by artistic communities. The adjacent garages have become a place for the development of music counter-culture, graffiti, performance art, and so on. Oleksandr Burlaka\u2019s specially designed architectural project has to revive the abandoned area for the benefit of the city dwellers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As part of the <em>Neighbours<\/em> project, there will be held an educational program dedicated to the issues of emergency architecture. This is an international movement that aims to provide architectural solutions for the areas affected by rapid urbanization, poverty, conflict, and natural disasters. A series of debates, visual presentations, workshops, and musical events will be held by architects, art historians, and urban philosophers and practitioners. They will address the negative effects of the chaotic urban development resulting from illegal space appropriations, visual warfare, and military intervention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The festival will include the events dedicated to architecture, landscape design, graffiti culture, alternative music, and cinematography.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The festival program offers workshops, lectures by Ukrainian and European architects, music and graffiti jams, and film screenings. As part of the festival, the adjacent area will be arranged by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/formografia\/\">Formografia design studio<\/a>\u00a0(the founders of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/artostriv\/\">Ostriv Science and Art Platform<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The educational program includes the lecture <em>The Figures of Negativity: Elements of Architecture of Contradiction <\/em>by Mattia Pretolani, an architect, the lead manager of EASA 2019; the lecture <em>Architectural Agency. Small Projects <\/em>by Tomasz \u015awietlik, the chief architect of Stsena in Dnipro City; and the lecture <em>Architecture of Commune<\/em> by the Ukrainian architect Dana Kosmina. The musical part includes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/1846784555630856\/\">Zakip vol.7<\/a>, and the first Kyiv\u2019s graffiti shop\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/garagecanshop\/\">GARAGE CANSHOP<\/a>\u00a0will hold a graffiti battle.
